Die DB AG beschaffte für den InterCity-Verkehr zwei Arten von Steuerwagen. Die 75 Exemplare der Bauart Bpmbdzf 296 (ursprünglich Bpmbdzf 297) sind druckdicht und klimatisiert, verfügen über Schwenkschiebetüren und eine Groraum-Bestuhlung. Im Gegensatz zur Bauart Bauart Bimdzf 271 besitzen die Längsträger aerodynamische Schürzen.
